Emergency Support Request from Finca Pasiflora

Hello, Viners!

I'm Wade Moore, the Chicken Dude from Finca Pasiflora.

On Tuesday 16th of September, our river (Sonador) rose more than I remember in my 41 years.

It lowered the river bed at the point where our water intake is...leaving the concrete intake high and dry.

The water is mostly for running our small hydro settup, which runs the fruit drier and the refrigeration units, among other things.

This intake is also the source of water for our fish ponds, the ducks, cows...and all our plumbing!

Needless to say, this has really thrown us for a loop.

At present, even with the high water levels of the season, we are stuggling with sandbags (after every hard rain) to keep the water coming.

In February or March of next year we dearly hope to pour a small concrete dam to solve our present problem.

We'll be needing at least 12 cubic meters of clean stone for this job.

There is plenty of stone to be taken from the river, but if taken in the dry season, every stone will need scrubbing . The best plan is to take stone from the river now, while the river has it freshly scrubbed...and may replenish the supply at any time.

The reason I address you readers, is to humbly request any help you can spare. We have a couple (or 3) groups coming between December and March, but meanwhile we are pretty much squeezing by on a week to week basis for our basic needs.

We are in desperate need of:

  • volunteers for collecting and hauling rocks and gravel (due to the urgency of the situation, we'll ask only $10 per day to help cover expenses, down from our usual $15)
  • appropriate tools and accesories for the job at hand ( tough rubber gloves, elastic safety belts, sheet plastic, feed sacks, rubber boots, iron bar, shovels, heavy screen for separating gravel, etc.)
  • Cash donations will be greatly appreciated, as we need to pay a lot of local labor... in fact we are owing about $100 at present , for that rubric.
  • In absence of a hefty and brawny volunteer force, we figure we'll be needing at least $600 just for local labor to collect and haul the necesary rocks and gravel.

For the main project in the dry season we're looking at $1500 in materials, plus possibly the same in labor.

All purchased materials have to be carried about 800 meters up hill and through the woods to the site.

These materials are: re-bar, welded grid, cement and sand.

I am at Colibri's Corner every Thursday with my chickens, and I trust her with and for the effects of collecting any cash, materials, accessories or tools that you may desire to contribute to the cause of our "little" emergency.

For those friends who cannot come to the feria, but wish to contribute, the Chayotevine has very kindly offered to handle donations by pay-pal via chayotevine@gmail.com. Please make note that it is for Finca Pasiflora,

Once the project at hand is at least well and visibly under way, we'll be giving a THANK YOU! lunch with farm tour included for everyone whose contribution is worth $20 or more.

Please look us up at www.fincapasiflora.org. Also a photo diary on Facebook here.

It is really, very embarrassing for us to ask for handouts, but we desperately need to get this thing moving. We have no money to do what we need to do
, and it is a bit late in the season to go to the States to work for it.

If you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to write me at fincapasiflora@yahoo.com or call/text me 8737-6331.

Hoping for a bounty of blessings, and with a big THANK YOU! in advance...
